Emotional Trauma Damages the Immune System  




Dr. Frank Putman of the National Institute of Mental Health and Dr. Marvin Teicher of Harvard Medical School presented their findings at the APA Psychiatric Association meeting in Philadelphia.  A study following 170 girls, ages 6 to 15 years old, half sexually abused, showed abnormally high stress hormones which kill neurons in brain areas crucial to thinking and memory.

In addition, high levels of an antibody that weakens the human immune system.  Many have been sexually and physically abused.  In addition, it hampered development of language and logic and caused damage to the left hemisphere.  Brain wave differences between the abused and non?abused are significant as between normal people and those who have Alzheimer's disease or schizophrenia.  The abused should not feel they are doomed, but we do know that emotional trauma damages the immune system and that brain rehabilitation is necessary.  The brain controls the body.
